Turbulent Drag Reduction of polyelectrolyte solutions: relation with the elongational viscosity

چکیده

We report measurements of turbulent drag reduction of two different polyelectrolyte solutions: DNA and hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide. Changing the salt concentration in the solutions allows us to change the flexibility of the polymer chains. For both polymers the amount of drag reduction was found to increase with the flexibility. Rheological studies reveal that the elongational viscosity of the solutions increases simultaneously. Hence we conclude that the elongational viscosity is the pertinent macroscopic quantity to describe the ability of a polymer to cause turbulent drag re-

Turbulent Drag Reduction by Spanwise Wall Oscillations

The objective of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of wall oscillation as a control scheme of drag reduction. Two flow configurations are considered: constant flow rate and constant mean pressure gradient. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using Fourier-Chebyshev spectral methods and the oscillation in sinusoidal form is enforced on the walls through boundary conditions for the sp...

A Mean Flow Model for Polymer and Fiber Turbulent Drag Reduction

© Appl. Rheol. 15 (2005) 370–389 Abstract: We present a one-parameter model that fits quantitatively the mean velocity profiles from experiments and numerical simulations of drag-reduced wall-bounded flows of dilute solutions of polymers and non-Brownian fibers in the low and modest drag reduction regime. The model is based on a viscous mechanism of drag reduction, in which either extended poly...

بررسی تجربی اثرات پوشش هم جهت دیسک دوار بر گشتاور ناشی از اصطکاک پوسته‌ای

The drag coefficients on discs rotating in a cylindrical tank has studied in relation to the nature of a composite coating attached to the underside of the disc, and direct comparisons were made with refrence discs of identical geometry which were completely rigid. The composite coating was formed by: (1) bondig of velvet fabric to the metal disc with velour face outward, (2) casting a premixed...

Elongational Viscosity of Monodisperse and Bidisperse Polystyrene Melts

The startup and steady uniaxial elongational viscosity have been measured for two monodisperse polystyrene melts with molecular weights of 52 kg/mole and 103 kg/mole, and for three bidisperse polystyrene melts. The monodisperse melts show a maximum in the steady elongational viscosity vs. the elongational rate, ǫ̇, of about two times 3η0 whereas the bidisperse melts have a maximum of up to a fac...

Retardation of the onset of turbulence by minor viscosity contrasts.

Motivated by turbulent drag reduction by minute concentrations of polymers we study the effects of minor viscosity contrasts on the stability of hydrodynamic flows. The key player is a localized region where fluctuations are produced by interactions with the mean flow (the "critical layer"). We show that a layer of weakly space-dependent viscosity placed near the critical layer has a very large...
